Homecoming for AD McGarity

Athens-native, UGA alum, and University of Florida Assistant Athletic Director, Greg McGarity will be named the new University of Georgia Athletic Director Friday. The era of leadership as former player Damon Evans supplanted legendary coach Vince Dooley was briefer than expected, but basically solid. Until the end, when Evans was ousted for DUI, he was an involved and conscious AD that made some good things happen, and we should all wish him well.

The overall sports programs and athletic facilities are in fine condition for McGarity’s return:

Baseball, Men’s Basketball and Football are definitely looking for much improved records this upcoming school year. Perno and Eller won’t let the baseball team stay down long, after two tough years have followed a string of great success. Fox is on the right path in hoops. And Richt’s pairing with new defensive coordinator Grantham will result in a new defensive scheme and renewed emphasis on defensive aggression. Defense wins championships.

The old Stegasaurus Coliseum is under major modern renovation; Sanford is one of the true beauties of Americana with her open end with bridge feature; even little Foley Field is a hidden gem.

Women’s athletics are strong, keeping overall high Director’s Cup rankings within reach. It’s time for the big 3 men’s sports at UGA to take a major step up. GEORGIA FOOTBALL starts September 4th at noon.
