Scoutin’ the Cajuns

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns – formerly Louisiana-Lafayette and before that Southwest Louisiana – play in the Sunbelt Conference in front of 31,000. They travel to ATHENS, GA Saturday to take on your Big Hairy Dawgs in an opener tuneup for GEORGIA a week prior to a potentially nefarious road trip to Columbia. The Gamecocks have proven returning talent and usually play us tough, especially in Columbia, where Richt is nevertheless undefeated.

This week we are talking Cajuns. They were 6-6 last season, while playing a freshman quarterback. They had an opportunistic defense which had a bunch of takeaways and return a veteran defensive backfield. Comparing them versus upper talent, they upset a down Kansas State in a home game early last season and were blown out by LSU. I expect the latter here, as stud AJ Green and the sometimes inconsistent Caleb King look to lead the offense while Washaun Ealey is out with suspension for an automobile incident and driving without a valid license. The other players around Caleb will make it easy for him to run through holes and gain big chunks…this week.

The Murry era is underway Saturday and here’s wishing him the best ‘Tween the Hedges. Big job these days, playing quarterback for our beloved institution. That has meant Eric Zeier and then (Coach) Bobo, spelled when hurt by QB Hines Ward, and then Quincy Carter, eventually replaced by Cory Phillips. And then David Greene – he set the all time win mark over Peyton Manning (now owned by Colt McCoy). Shockley got one ring in one try. Then JTIII bombed and a kid from Texas took over who’d go number one overall his junior year. Cox was basically a bust with five losses, though he did throw for an unusually high number of touchdowns last year. It’s a big job and we’ve had mixed results at the position since we really started winging it with Zeier. Murray has all the weapons in place to succeed this season, and the pressure is on.

SWL (Southwest Louisiana) heavily recruited the area where I lived and played sports in Louisiana in 7th grade, and it seems like it’d be a fun school – Ragin’ Cajuns is such a great nickname. SWL eventually switched to Louisiana-Lafayette. Later, they attempted to switch names again, to the University of Louisiana. A move blocked by LSU loyalists in State Assembly. Instead, they now go by Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns.
